coastal-living

Demand for coastal living is stronger than ever, and recent research by Rightmove has found that seaside locations have seen the most significant rent increases over the past year. Many people aspire to live in coastal towns and cities, with the sea on your doorstep and the lifestyle it has to offer, and it’s easy to see why.

Brighton’s seaside location was a big selling point when we first invested in the city in 2014, which, combined with its excellent transport links and thriving cultural and leisure scene, make it great place to live.

Below, we have outlined some of the key factors of why people choose to live by the coast and what it has to offer.

Health benefits

It’s no secret that sea air is good for your health – fresher, cleaner and with higher oxygen levels mean it has a number of benefits, including improving your sleep. It can also assist your mental wellbeing as research suggests that the sea is a calming influence and lowers levels of stress. With many people choosing coastal locations as a place to relax on holiday, it comes as no surprise that people are seeing the appeal of living there full time.

A more active lifestyle

A study by the University of Exeter found that ‘people who live close to the coast are more likely to meet physical activity guidelines than inland dwellers’. There is a wide range of different possible activities, including a swim in the sea, a coastal run or a cycle along the promenade, meaning people don’t need a gym membership to get fit. With regular exercise key to a healthier lifestyle, this is another strong selling point for those considering a life by the sea.

Improved work-life balance

A big appeal of living in these seaside locations is the fact that it is far easier to achieve a better work-life balance. Many areas often have fast transport links to London for those commuting, but with more people enjoying flexible and hybrid working, many are commuting to the office less anyway. These towns and cities also have lots to see and do, whether it’s an evening stroll along the beach or eating and drinking in one of the many restaurants and bars.
